June 24 / Increased demand prompts new Provincial electricity strategy.
On June 15, the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions and BC Hydro announced a new long-term strategy to address increasing electricity demand. Powering Growth, Fueling Opportunity outlines the Province’s response to projected increases in electricity demand of 20% by 2030 and a 50% by 2050, including a 44% increase in peak demand. The plan aims to meet this increased demand through three approaches:
June 18 / Pairing batteries with wind and solar means cleaner, more flexible grids in Canada.
The costs of utility-scale batteries are sharply falling. In the past decade, the cost of installed batteries has fallen about 20 per cent per year on average. Lower costs have enabled global annual battery installations to grow by 80 per cent per year. Canada is starting to follow these global trends as utilities turn to batteries to support grid flexibility, which refers to the ability of a grid to respond to changes in power supply and demand in real time.

The Ontario government is going all in on renewables as the Independent Electricity System (IESO) executes on competitively procuring more than 1,300 megawatts (MW) of new electricity supply. With 14 projects approved across the province, Ontario’s Long-Term 2 (LT2) Energy Window 1 procurement is a milestone for clean, affordable electricity.

The 2025 Energy Efficiency Programs Report provides a detailed picture of utility demand-side management (DSM) activities across Canada.
The report tracks these activities in provinces and territories through three main sections:
1. A review of utility DSM plans and portfolio benchmarks
2. A jurisdictional scan of demand flexibility initiatives
3. A jurisdictional scan of equity-oriented programs
